All products intended for retail sale in Mexico must be labeled in Spanish prior to being imported into Mexico. Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM) is the name of each of a series of official, compulsory standards and regulations for diverse activities in Mexico. Products that must comply with commercial and sanitary technical regulations must follow the guidelines as specified in the applicable NOM. A product may be imported only if it has the appropriate NOM criteria based on its product type. Goods that do not comply with the applicable NOMs may not be imported into Mexico. Customs authorities verify whether importers can provide proof that their products’ comply with all applicable mandatory standards.
